People and CommunityThe Métis people of Canada experienced a very troubled history. They were not recognized as the Aboriginals till late 20th century and were devoid of any rights and privileges. A governing council, the Métis National Council was established in the year 1983, to represent all the Métis people of Canada. The council was established after the Métis were recognized as the third Aboriginal group of Canada, (other two being First Nations and Inuit) in the Section 35 of Constitution Act of 1982.
